Default Finding sample messages from various EMR vendors

Does anyone have a good source for sample messages from all of the various EMR vendors??

My employer is a GE VAR and our project (which uses Mirth as an interface layer) has gotten to the point where we need to start testing with messages from other vendors. We've stuck as close to the HL7 standard as possible, but GE has their own tweaks and I'm sure other vendors do too.

Is there a good central source for this kind of thing or do I need to go to each vendor and ask/beg/steal the samples we need?

Would it be appropriate to post sample messages in the Mirth file repo once I find them?

There is no "central source for this kind of thing". Each vendor should be able to provide you a document (usually *.pdf or *.doc format) which is the specification for the HL7 messages sent by their particular application. These documents will usually include a sample message or two which you can copy/paste for testing purposes. Since these documents contain proprietary information, vendors are reluctant to authorize them to be posted in some central repository.

In the real world, it is nice to receive a spec from the vendor but I always try to get the newly installed application to send me a test message so that I can verify what the vendor ACTUALLY sends; what is sent does not always match the printed spec. Different applications from the same vendor may be inconsistent with how HL7 messaging is implemented. HL7 message implementation will often change when a vendor offers a new version of an application. Most healthcare applications require a great deal of tailoring and configuration during implementation and this all affects which HL7 messages are produced and how those messages are populated.

Most people doing interface work accumulate personal libraries of specs and sample messages over time and you will probably do the same.

Hi,

I am interested in knowing how to do what you suggested:
To have a newly installed EMR send you sample HL7, can you
elaborate a bit on this?

1) Do you havae to buy a copy of the EMR?
2) Do you need some tool to capture the HL7
sent by the tested EMR?
3) How do you get HL7 interface in a 3rd party EMR
working so you can receive Hl7 messages?

I apprecite your tips,

1) Not always. Some vendors offer developer and demo copies, but don't like to just hand them out since they make money off of making interfaces like you would.

2) Yes. The specifications from these companies can be many years and a few versions out of date. Mirth is usually sufficient to capture these, point the EMR at Mirth and have Mirth save the messages as flat files.

3) Thats going to vary from one EMR to the next. You have to know what data to provide to it so it maps properly (for example does it want a doctor ID that it has or a UPIN which everyone else has?) and you also have to understand where it puts that data once it has it. Getting a message to the EMR only to have it be misfiled is a huge problem.

I'm trying to think of any EMRs that you could get a demo of right away. OpenVISTA comes to mind, but it is a HUGE piece of software and its a lot of work to get it running even with their VMWare images.

GE likes to hide the EMR interface manual even though its available somewhere on their website.

EDIT: Damn, file is too big.

I work on the MIK and LinkLogic all the time and have written alot of custom programs for the Millbrook/Logician/Centricity products since Logician 5.5 and Paradigm-MPM01/02/03/04 and now CPS2006 currently on build 8.0.224 SP3. I also do the installs and support for EMR and PM. My plan is instead of writing VB apps to handle many things we have done, I would like to use Mirth. Expecially because Titan the upcoming release with be using JBOSS from what I hear and Mirth integrates. I think as VAR we should all get together and start sharing the Channels, it would be really help all of us in the long run. I have found a few ways to already use the program for from SQL to ATD, SQL to DFT, File to File, Port To File with Transformations, and soon SFTP to File and many other crazy things. Glad to see someone else out here that is using the centricity product.

Drop me an email (see my sig). We'll get something going with the GE VARs. That should make it easier to release quality code for GE products to the Mirth community as well.

Of course I'm sure I'm violating at least 3 or 4 sections of our employers' VAR agreements by even mentioning 'GE', 'interop', and 'open' in the same post!

Hey guys,
Don't limit this to just the VAR's. There are several of us "users" out there that write our own stuff that would love to have input on this as well. I know i've been working on converting the 2.3 output to 2.4 for the past 4 weeks. It's not an easy thing to do. And I'm not in the position to go out and buy a cookie cutter interface engine to do this, Enter Mirth. I see the potential for this program and have several channels up and running already.

Like Mike says, the upcoming version of our EMR is going to NEED Mirth!

Just my two cents

Michael

We do want more people to be able to use Mirth against GE products. After all more people using GE means more sales for the VARs.

The problem is that as a developer for VAR, I have no idea what information I know that I'm allowed to share. It wouldn't do anyone any good if GE got upset with a VAR for giving out more info than we should have. However when one VAR is talking to another we don't have to do as much CYA.

The other advantage to going through the VARs first is that we know GE's stuff inside and out.

I guess at this point the best thing to do is post about what you're trying to do against GE's software and I and the other GE 'insiders' will help as much as we can.

Happy Hacking!
