Default message templates and xsd schema

hi I'm very new to mirth and have a couple general questions. Thanks in advance.

I want to receive a HL7 v3 message (xml with a known .xsd schema) and extract some info out of it and send it to a different channel.

Can I use the .xsd schema file to aid me extract information out of it? It seems like I can only put in an actual example .xml file in the message template section. Only this way can I access the fields and forward them to a different channel.

cannot get values when putting this in tempalte

<xs:element name="note">
<xs:element name="to" type="xs:string"/>
<xs:element name="from" type="xs:string"/>
<xs:element name="body" type="xs:string"/>

I can get the fields when I put this in message template (with or without values between tags)

I don't think you could use .xsd files in template. From what I know it won't make sense as it is a definition file that talks about the said xml.

What's wrong with using the XML file?
