Default explaining date.get

Thanks in advance for any elucidation on this issue.

I've been seeing people using:
Code:
${date.get('yyyy-MM-dd-HH.mm.ss')}
in their output filename.
I tried to use it in a transformer so as to reuse it in a postprocessor, but it resulted in a 'no semicolon before...' javascript error.
Could someone explain the logic of the date.get expression?
When is it used? When is it supposed to be used?
Can it be used in a script or in a transformer?

And, again, thanks.

I use the getDate in the transformer.

DateUtil.getDate(pattern, date);
