Default Alerts and Errors

Newbie learning my way around I set out to have alerts on errors sent to my cell phone, but I had a lot of trouble creating an error condition. The tutorial said send a binary file and process it like a text message and that would cause an error, but in fact what happens is Mirth just sends it along.
Finally I tried changing the expected incoming message type on the channel to delimited, but actually sent it an HL7 message over LLP from the HL7 inspector.

The channel reported an error. No alert was triggered. But what is especially strange is I cannot find the actual error. When I set the tab to errors on the channel and scroll through the grid lines, nothing appears in the box below!

This is so very weird. Any ideas about why this happening and especially a better way to trigger an error that will test my alert?
