Default How does bidirectional comms work?

Hello. Being new to HL7 and LIS integration, I would like to understand how bidirectional transfer of information works. We are developing a lab instrument that reads an accession number from a sample tube and then (using Host-query mode) will obtain the test ordered through the LIS. As I understand it, a different mode of operation (bidirectional) has the LIS sending all tests to the instrument, which must save the order information locally.

I was wondering if the LIS sends all tests ordered and the instrument must filter messages specific to its capabilities, or if the LIS somehow only sends messages to an instrument that it can handle based on an instrument ID or some such thing.

Any help in clarifying how this is done is appreciated.
