Have you tried setting up an alert? I assume you are seeing errors in the server log when it happens?

So what happens when it loses access? I would expect the underlying library used for the connection to be thowing connection lost or you don't have permission errors that should get spit out to the log. I know I get tons of unwanted log messages from the sftp reader when the server closes my connection.

I changed the settings in the File Reader from file to smb and now i get alerts...
is the any difference in functionality between file(with UNC) and smb?

Yes, smb uses the jcifs java library to access the share. Accessing it as a local file through UNC is only supported on Windows and Java passes off the network handling to the operating system. Also you will access the share as the user the mirth service is running as, which is not the case when using the smb setting.
