Default Is Mirth suitable for general EDI work?

My company is currently using Mirth as an HL7 gateway into our project. It works VERY well in that role.

The project is being forked to support a different industry and we're exploring our options for gateways that will let us send/recieve EDI messages (X12 and XML).

Has anyone used these new features in 1.4? Successes? Problems?

Is Mirth suitable as a general messaging gateway? Is it suitable for this as it is or will we need to develop it a little further?
