Mirth Corporation Launches Mirth UK Ltd.

Leader in open source interoperability solutions for healthcare responds to growing overseas demand by launching European operating unit

Irvine, CA, and London, UK January 19, 2010 – Mirth Corporation, the leader in commercial open source healthcare information technology announced today the launch of London-based Mirth Ltd., a wholly owned business unit set up to service a growing number of customers in the United Kingdom (UK).

The move is a response to the fact that a growing number of National Health Service (NHS) Trusts across the UK have begun using Mirth Connect to integrate local health information systems, such as the integration of a Patient Administration System (PAS) with a lab system. In some instances organisations have discontinued use of costly proprietary systems and embraced Mirth Connect as their core Interface Engine for clinical messaging across Acute Trust (hospital) systems.

Mirth’s move into the UK comes as the NHS undergoes reassessment and re-planning of Health Information Technology initiatives. The National Programme for IT (NPfIT) is renegotiating several of its contracts with large IT suppliers and selectively decentralizing parts of the overall technology build and deployment to local entities. Many UK-based Acute and Primary Care Trusts are evaluating local options for achieving interoperability; with a considerably more manageable price tag than high-cost proprietary options Mirth technologies allow Trusts quick access to an integration platform that allows them to build and manage local solutions that can be deployed very rapidly to meet their GPs increasing need for clinical data.

Mirth Connect, offers the cost advantage of open source software with full commercial support from Mirth UK Ltd and its U.S. parent company.

According to Jonathan Edwards, Gartner’s European healthcare research director, in 2010/11 “NHS trusts will be investing in low-cost interoperability solutions that enable then to share critical data between GP, community and acute care organisations.”

Since its launch as the Mirth Project in 2006, Mirth Connect has become the most widely downloaded open source software for healthcare data integration, with over 70,000 worldwide downloads and a user community numbering over 7,000 professionals. Mirth Connect supports all major healthcare data interchange standards, including HL7, X12, DICOM, and XML.

“Our rapid growth during 2009 in the U.S., combined with growing interest from UK constituents makes the opening of Mirth Ltd. a natural next step for our organisation,” commented Jon Teichrow, president of Mirth Corporation. “We’re looking forward to spending more time with our growing base of UK customers to understand their needs and to collaborate on solving their local integration problems and extending our suite of open source solutions to power connected care across the UK.”

Mirth Ltd. will offer its first series of training and certification courses in London the week of March 22nd. Those interested in enrolling or learning more can contact Mirth Ltd. at mirth@mirthcorp.co.uk.
